Three canvases. Three sports. One long day. Each one holds a single block of colour and a single sweep of paint — the cold blue of open water, the dry olive of the road, the burnt red of the last few kilometres. The paint is thick and left exactly where it landed. Effort rarely looks tidy. Then look closer. A swimmer, a cyclist, a runner, each no bigger than a fingernail, standing at the edge of something far bigger than they are. That is the whole sport in one image: a small person, a long way to go, and no way through it but across. Comes as a set of three. Hang them in this order — swim, bike, run — and your eye travels the race.

About the artist
Hilde Vandorpe
My mother spent her working life in a medical lab in West Flanders, where everything has a correct answer. In 2002 she signed up for a calligraphy course in Bruges, and something about drawing one letter slowly enough to get it right took hold. She never stopped going back.
A decade in, the careful lettering started meeting action painting, and by 2019 she was pouring acrylics — tilting a canvas and letting the colours find each other on their own. She will tell you she is not in control of it. Having watched her do it at the kitchen table for years, I think that is the part she loves.
